Humping

15 augustus 2018 - Gordonvale, Australië

So instead of the domino's job I got another job at a farm. In the en I wish I didn't, but we'll get to that later. I think the day I wrote my last story I came back to the camp and some guys that were camping with us got a new farm job in the area through a working hostel. Me and Phil asked if we could go there as well and we could; there would be plenty of work."

So happy and excited to work we went there. We had to wait 3 days before our first working day which would be banana humping. It's a notorious job and I heard from tons of people that it is seriously heavy. Boy were they right...

The first few hours were fine actually. We had to walk with a "Chopper". They would remove the ropes (the trees were attached to each other with "washing lines" to not collapse under the weight of the bunches), cut the tree in a bit and pull on the rope to get the bunch in reach.
Me, the humper, had to bull the bunch down, balance it on either shoulder and if I was ready the chopper would cut the bunch off the tree and I would walk to the tractor. This walk was usually between 30 and 70 meters and through slippery mud and over residues of banana trees.

Oh did I already mention that these bunches were almost as big as me and weighed between 60-90 kg. On of them broke in half on my shoulder because the stem couldn't handle the weight. That's modern breeding for ya. That and a supervisor that tires you out completely by pretty much dropping the bunches on you for 15-20 minutes (I think he liked to see tire me out and see me suffer) made this job rediculously heavy.

After the first break we were both tired. At the 2nd break (about 6 hours of nothing but humping) we decided to quit. I literally felt my body all over for 3 days after...

I realised I didn't want to work like this and left the working hostel the same week, filling my time by playing GTA V on the PS4 that they had there. It was actually really nice to have that comfort again.
